This refresh rate test times the gap between frames your browser draws and turns the middle (median) value into Hz. If it lands within 3% of a common rate such as 60, 120 or 144, that rate is shown.

How the refresh rate test works

Frame intervals

The browser calls the page once per screen refresh. The last 120 gaps are timed in milliseconds.

Median, not average

The median ignores the odd slow frame, so one hitch does not pull the result down.

Snap to common rates

A result near a standard value is rounded to it, so a 59.94 Hz screen shows as 60 Hz.

Frame rate vs refresh rate

Frame rate (FPS)

How many new images the browser, game or app produces each second. It depends on your device, the software and how busy the processor and graphics chip are.

Refresh rate (Hz)

How many times per second the screen redraws. It is fixed by the display and its current setting. A browser normally draws once per refresh, so its frame rate tops out at the refresh rate.

Why your Hz may read lower than expected

Check the display setting

Windows: Settings → System → Display → Advanced display. macOS: System Settings → Displays. Pick the highest refresh rate your screen offers.

Use a performance power mode

Laptops and phones often limit frame rate on battery. Plug in or switch to a high performance profile, and turn off low power mode.

Update graphics drivers

Install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, or update your phone and browser.

Turn on hardware acceleration

In Chrome or Edge, enable “Use graphics acceleration when available” and restart the browser.

Close heavy apps and tabs

Background apps, video calls and many tabs compete for the same graphics chip.

Use the right cable and port

High refresh rates need DisplayPort or a recent HDMI version, and the port on the graphics card, not the motherboard.

Limits of a browser Hz check

This page measures what your browser actually draws, using requestAnimationFrame. Browsers cap their frame rate at the refresh rate of the display, so the Hz value is an estimate of the rate your screen is running at right now, not the maximum it supports. It cannot measure response time (GtG), input lag, screen tearing or whether the panel itself skips frames; those need special hardware or a camera.

Refresh rate FAQ

Is the Hz value exact?

It is an estimate of the rate your browser is drawing at. Frame timing wobbles by a fraction of a millisecond, so the raw value is rounded to the nearest common rate when it is close.

My 120 Hz phone shows 60 Hz. Why?

Phones lower the refresh rate in low power mode, on some browsers, or when the screen is static. Turn off power saving and keep a finger moving on the screen if needed.

Can it detect variable refresh rate (VRR, G-Sync, FreeSync)?

No. A browser cannot read VRR state. It only sees how often frames arrive.

Why does 60.00 Hz sometimes appear on any screen?

Some browsers fall back to 60 Hz timing when they are not synced to the display. Try another browser to confirm.
