This fps comparison moves the same UFO at the same speed in each row, but each row only updates at its own frame rate. Rows above the refresh rate your screen is running at are labelled instead of shown, because a display cannot show more frames than it refreshes.

How to read the fps comparison

15 and 30 fps

Visible steps; the UFO jumps.

60 fps

Smooth on any screen.

120 fps and above

Only shown on screens running at 120 Hz or more.

Understanding frame rates

24 fps

The film standard. Fine for movies, but looks choppy in fast games.

30 fps

Common on older consoles and phone power-saving modes. Playable, not smooth.

60 fps

The baseline for most monitors, laptops and phones. Smooth for everyday use.

120 fps

Used by many phones, tablets, TVs and consoles. Noticeably smoother scrolling and motion.

144 fps

A popular gaming monitor rate. Each frame lasts about 6.9 ms.

240 fps

Esports monitors. About 4.2 ms per frame, so motion is very fluid.

Frame rate vs refresh rate

Frame rate (FPS)

How many new images the browser, game or app produces each second. It depends on your device, the software and how busy the processor and graphics chip are.

Refresh rate (Hz)

How many times per second the screen redraws. It is fixed by the display and its current setting. A browser normally draws once per refresh, so its frame rate tops out at the refresh rate.

FPS comparison FAQ

Why can I not see the 144 fps row?

Your screen is running below 144 Hz, so that row would look the same as a lower one. Raise the refresh rate in your display settings and reload.

Is 60 vs 120 fps a big difference?

On a 120 Hz screen most people notice smoother scrolling and motion. Compare the two rows above while tracking the UFO.
